Get your free estimateLinear Access Control Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Linear access control components across Fort Lauderdale every week, and a typical installed access-control job runs $380 to $840 depending on whether you need a keypad, telephone entry unit, card reader, or a full panel swap. Most repairs we can schedule within one business day in Fort Lauderdale, often same day if you call before noon. The way most owners discover a problem is simple: a keypad stops accepting codes, a card reader pauses for five seconds before rejecting every badge, or the gate stops responding to the exit loop entirely. That’s an access control failure, and it usually traces back to one worn component, not the whole gate.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s access control line splits into two families the residential and light-commercial keypads (the AK-11, the older AE-1000/2000 series) and the heavier telephone entry and card systems like the Linear AE-500, AM-KP, and IEI/Linear-compatible panels wired into gate operators. The quickest way to identify yours is to open the keypad or panel housing and read the small white label inside the wiring compartment. You’re looking for either “AK,” “AE,” or “AM” followed by a number. That label matters because Linear changed its wiring pinouts between the AE-1000 and the AK series, and a technician who assumes compatibility will have your gate doing the opposite of what you just programmed. We carry OEM Linear boards and keypads on the truck plus quality aftermarket equivalents for older models where Linear has discontinued the original part. For most Fort Lauderdale homeowners, the aftermarket option saves $60 to $140 and carries the same 365-day guarantee from us, but we’ll always tell you when OEM is the better call.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts codes only after several hard presses. The membrane switch contacts inside the faceplate wear down from humidity and repeated entry. Coastal Fort Lauderdale air shortens the lifespan of these switches compared to drier climates.
- Card reader flashes red and rejects a valid badge. Often the relay inside the reader is chattering, or the weigand wiring from reader to panel has corroded at a splice. Salt air near the Intracoastal accelerates this more than most people expect.
- Gate opens randomly without anyone entering a code. This usually means the request-to-exit wiring is shorting against the operator chassis, which tells the access control board to fire the open relay continuously. It is also, in our experience, one of the most common reasons neighbors start leaving notes on your windshield.
- Telephone entry unit rings and rings, then drops the call. The cell module or phone-line surge protection inside the Linear panel has failed, often after a lightning strike or a power surge through the operator. Broward County thunderstorms claim a fair share of these boards every summer.
- Everything tests fine at the panel but the gate still won’t move from the access control input. The relay on the access control board has welded or worn out. It clicks, but it never actually closes the circuit. This is the part most often misdiagnosed as an operator problem when the operator is fine.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Linear access control installation in Fort Lauderdale, budget these ranges, parts and labor included:
- Residential keypad replacement (AK-11 or equivalent): $380 to $520 installed
- Commercial card reader swap (AE-series, single reader): $520 to $680 installed
- Telephone entry unit replacement (AE-500 class): $720 to $960 installed
- Full access control board replacement and rewiring: $640 to $840 installed
What moves the price within those ranges is the age of your existing wiring, whether the old keypad has to be re-drilled or the new one covers the same footprint, and whether we need to run a new power lead because the old one has corroded. Every quote includes the part, the labor, the wiring check, and the programming of your codes and method in another word the credentials. You get the written price before a single wire is pulled. If we find something mid-job that changes the scope, we stop and tell you before we spend your money.

You can safely check two things yourself: whether the keypad faceplate is cracked or visibly swollen from moisture, and whether the wiring at the keypad has any obvious loose or green terminals. What you should not do is open a Linear control panel next to the gate operator and start probing terminals. These panels run line voltage on adjacent terminals, and a slipped probe will fry the board you were trying to save, or worse. More practically, the compatibility gotcha with Linear is real: the AE-1000 and AK-11 use different colored wire assignments, and swapping one for the other without rewiring usually leaves you with a keypad that lights up and does nothing. If you’re already in this spot, call (754) 354-7351. We will either walk you through a safe test or send a background-checked tech who already knows which Linear revision you’re working with.
FAQs
Most Linear residential keypads last six to nine years along the coast, but units installed within a mile of salt water often fail at the relay or membrane right around the five-year mark. Humidity and wind-driven salt spray shorten the lifespan compared to inland locations, and we see that pattern consistently across Las Olas, Victoria Park, and Rio Vista.
Sometimes, yes. If the failure is a cracked faceplate or a corroded terminal strip inside the housing, we can often replace just that component for $150 to $220 instead of swapping the whole keypad. If the main board has gone, replacement is the honest fix. Unlike an operator swap, there’s no rebuild path for a failed circuit board. Call us at (754) 354-7351 if you’d like a straight answer on your specific linear model before buying parts.
Most single-keypad or single-reader installations take between one and two hours from the moment we park the truck. A telephone entry unit with new wiring can run three to four hours, and we’ll tell you that before we begin, not after.
We stock the most common Linear residential keypads, relays, and emergency-release boards on our trucks in Fort Lauderdale now. Some specialty boards and discontinued models require a one or two day order, and we’ll tell you upfront rather than leaving your gate down while we wait on a part. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies either way.
