Get your free estimateElite Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Elite-compatible hinge and roller replacement kits for residential slide and swing gates throughout Fort Lauderdale, with most complete hinge and roller jobs running $260 – $490 installed depending on your gate’s weight and Elite model. We keep the common Elite hinge pin sizes, roller brackets, and heavy-duty roller bearings on the truck, so we can usually get a failed Elite gate rolling again the same day we look at it. The symptom picture is almost always the same: the gate starts out with a small squeak, then a grind, then one morning it leans a few degrees and won’t travel the full track without shuddering or jumping the rail.
The part that fails isn’t complicated, but on a cantilever or tracked slide gate it carries several hundred pounds of steel every cycle. In Fort Lauderdale’s salt air and humidity, the failure usually starts as rust on the roller bearing itself or on the hinge pin, and by the time you hear it, the hardened steel race inside the bearing has already started spalling. We see it most in gates that face the Intracoastal waterway or sit within about two miles of the beach, where the airborne salt cuts bearing life nearly in half compared to inland neighborhoods like Plantation or Davie.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite’s residential slide gate operators, including the SL-3000 and SL-1000 series, drive gates that run on the Elite heavy-duty steel track and roller system. The hinge side matters most on swing applications and dual-gate setups, where Elite gates use either weld-on barrel hinges or bolt-through plate hinges, depending on whether the gate frame is square-tube steel or ornamental aluminum. If you’re not sure what’s on your gate, look at the hinge plate itself: Elite’s steel hinges have the part number stamped into the plate or pin head, usually starting with SL or HD.
One compatibility gotcha we run into often: the original Elite roller on a slide gate is a 4-inch sealed bearing wheel, but many of the replacement wheels sold online as “universal” are 3-inch unsealed units that will roll for about six months in Fort Lauderdale rust before the bearings seize. If your Elite gate uses the cantilever carriage system, the roller brackets are offset by design, and a generic bracket will change the gate’s clearance and make it catch the top rail. We match the wheel diameter, the bearing type, and the bracket offset to the specific Elite model before we order or install anything.
We prefer OEM Elite components when they’re available, but for gates that live near the water, we often recommend a sealed stainless-bearing aftermarket roller that outlasts the original in salt air. The decision comes down to how long you plan to keep the property and how close the gate sits to the salt line, and we’ll walk you through that choice before any money changes hands.

Signs Your Elite Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate squeals or grinds while moving. That sound is the bearing running dry and the balls or rollers inside starting to flatten. Once the bearing loses its grease and starts to gall, the wheel won’t roll, it’ll skid, and the track will wear flat spots into it.
- The gate leans toward the free end or cants sideways. On a slide gate, a leaning gate usually means a bottom roller has collapsed or the hinge-side pivot has wallowed out. The gate still operates, but it’s now grinding the top rail with every cycle.
- The gate jumps, shudders, or catches on the track. A dead roller bearing will make the gate lurch every time the wheel passes the same point. If it only does it in one spot, the wheel has a flat spot; if it’s constant, the bearing is seized entirely.
- You see rust staining down the face of the gate below a hinge. That rust drip means the hinge pin and bushing are oxidizing from the inside out. By the time the rust shows, the hinge has already lost most of its load capacity.
- The gate closes slower than it opens, or the operator labors. A failing roller or hinge adds friction at exactly the point where the operator pulls hardest. The Elite operator compensates for a while, then starts tripping its own overload sensor and stopping mid-travel.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Lauderdale, a full Elite hinge and roller replacement on a standard residential slide gate runs $260 – $390 for two bottom rollers, two top guide rollers, and new hinge pins and bushings, parts and labor included. A heavier cantilever or dual-wheel Elite gate starts around $400 and runs to $490 when the roller brackets themselves need to be cut off and re-welded. The price range comes down to gate weight, how corroded the hardware is, and whether we’re working with OEM Elite parts or the sealed stainless aftermarket option.
Every hinge and roller job gets a written price before we turn a single bolt. You’ll know the exact dollar figure for parts, the labor, and any bracket rework before the work begins, not after we’ve already taken the gate off its track. The repair carries the full Kingswell Guarantee, written on the invoice, and if the hinge or roller fails inside the first 365 days, we return and correct it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: run the gate and listen for where the sound is coming from, look for visible rust at the hinge pins, and spray a little silicone lubricant on the pins to see if the squeak quiets. What you shouldn’t do is put a jack under a slide gate and start pulling rollers or hinge pins, because a slide gate that comes off its track while it’s supported by a floor jack becomes several hundred pounds of steel moving in whatever direction gravity decides.
Hinge pins on a swing gate are under lateral load the entire time the gate is open. Pull the wrong pin first, the gate drops toward you or the post. On a cantilever slide gate, the counterweight section is designed to hold the gate in balance, and once you unbolt a roller bracket without supporting the frame the way the original installer did, the gate twists and binds the track. This is one of those repairs where the part is inexpensive and the labor is not, which means the most expensive version of this job is the one where a DIY attempt leaves the gate in the grass at 8 p.m. and we’re out there in the morning straightening it. Call (754) 354-7351 and we’ll get a tech out with the right rollers on the truck.
Do you stock replacement parts for other gate operator brands?
We stock parts for Elite gates alongside the other major operators: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, FAAC, BFT, Viking, Linear, and DoorKing. If you’re not sure what brand your operator is, send us a photo from your phone and we’ll ID it before the truck rolls. Most of the roller and hinge hardware we carry is either OEM or a sealed-bearing upgrade that outlasts the original in Fort Lauderdale’s salt air.
FAQs
How long should Elite hinges and rollers last in Fort Lauderdale?
Sealed OEM Elite rollers typically last 7 – 10 years in Fort Lauderdale, though gates within two miles of the coast often need hinges or rollers replaced in 5 – 7 years because the salt air eats the unsealed edges of the bearing. The hinge pin is usually the first component to go on a swing gate, while on a slide gate it’s the bottom roller that takes the whole gate’s weight and fails first. If your gate faces the water, expect to replace the bottom rollers roughly twice for every one operator replacement.
Can you repair a failing hinge or roller, or does it have to be replaced?
Once a roller bearing has started to grind or a hinge pin shows rust staining, there’s no practical way to bring it back, so replacement is the standard repair. The bearing races are hardened steel, and once they spall, even fresh grease won’t keep the wheel rolling true, and you’re buying maybe a month of quiet before the shuddering comes back. We make the call on-site: if the pin is still intact and only the bushing is worn, we can sometimes re-bush the hinge, but if the roller wheel has flat spots, it’s already dead.
How long does a hinge and roller replacement take?
Most Elite roller and hinge swaps take 2 – 4 hours on-site, including testing the gate’s full travel and verifying the operator’s force settings after the rollers are changed. If the bracket rework requires welding, the job usually takes a half-day because the new bracket has to be jigged and cooled before the gate goes back on the track. Give us a call at (754) 354-7351 and we’ll give you a real arrival window, not “sometime between 8 and 5.”
Do you keep Elite hinge and roller parts on the truck in Fort Lauderdale?
Yes. Our Fort Lauderdale trucks carry Elite 4-inch sealed rollers, hinge pins, bushings, and the stainless-bearing aftermarket upgrade, so most jobs are done in a single visit. If your gate uses an unusual Elite track size or a custom hinge configuration, we’ll have the part ordered and a second visit scheduled before we leave the driveway that same day.
